The bedroom is one of the most important rooms in the house. You spend 8 hours a day in there, after all! So, it’s worth spending a little extra time to make decor decisions that will promote calm feelings and restful nights.
From colour palettes to textures, stay tuned as we explore some of the best bedroom design trends for the new year…
Colour Palettes
When you think of traditional bedroom colours, you probably think of plain, neutral tones of creams, whites or light greys. They’re indeed calming and relaxing, but they can be a bit boring. This year bold colours are poised to take the lead throughout the house and most importantly – the bedroom!
Good designers know that it’s all about the overall feel of the room you’re sleeping in. You should make the most of minimalist furniture and reduce clutter whilst adding interest to the room using unique colours, patterns and textures. Bold colours and designs can also take a little more wear and tear than light walls, so that’s a bonus.
So, what are the trendy colours this year?
Strong ‘statement’ colours are the go-to, from masculine greys and dark blues to warm, earthy colours like terracotta and forest green. Any colour can make a statement, and this year’s trends completely open up for a wide range of tastes.

Bedroom Furniture and DIY Trends
Many of us are now in hybrid or full-time home-working arrangements, and when space is tight, moving the office into the bedroom can be a practical solution.
Whilst blending work and rest might be a daunting prospect for some, with a bit of pre-planning, you can separate both areas so that your desk won’t affect your sleep. It also helps to spend your non-working time out of the bedroom/office so you can still wind down and enjoy a bit of balance.
Consider these Desk Space Solutions:
• Wardrobes that fit a desk inside
• Multi-purpose areas such as a dressing table that doubles as a desk
• Separating areas with dividers and curtains.
Another trend we will see continuing this year is the infamous mattress-in-a-box. They made a splash a few years ago for their easy transportation and comfortable quality, and they continue to rise in popularity today. These mattresses are cleverly compressed and rolled into a box, so they are perfect for those that live in apartments or don’t want the hassle of carting around a huge mattress when they move.
These mattresses are crafted slightly differently from traditional mattresses, encompassing a more technological approach. Lots of them have varied ‘smart’ layers, like memory foam and cooling pads, but most still contain springs and coils for that all-important support.
Next on the List is DIY
From upcycling furniture to wall panelling, you’ve probably seen a video or two about them on TikTok or Instagram. Essentially, consumers are getting thrifty and realising that you don’t need to spend a fortune to switch up the look of your home and furniture. It’s a trend that’s likely to continue, especially considering all you need for DIY wall panelling is some MDF strips, some glue, a spirit level and your chosen paint or wood stain.
Similarly, for repainting furniture, grab some paint and new handles, and it’s like a whole new piece! Why not go for robust chalk paint or one of this year’s trending colours paired with sleek metal handles?
Consider these DIY Ideas:
• Decorative air vent covers – so easy
• Louvered doors for closets – often VERY high impact
• Ceiling fans are practical, beautiful – and can be a fun DIY project!
• Stylish assemble-at-home furnishing décor, like the settee bench below…
Bedroom Themes
Whilst the overarching theme this year is very much DIY and mixing colours and textures, there are also rising trends within the Scandinavian (Scandi) style of decor.
It’s a style that’s quite minimalistic and uses earthy elements such as wood and metal as the focal point, with white or light grey walls alongside thick textures like fluffy rugs or blankets. If you’re dreaming of a light, bright and airy room, Scandi decor might be for you.
To help boost those au natural Scandi vibes, houseplants are set to go big again this year.
During the pandemic, many of us got into gardening and keeping houseplants and found it pleasantly rewarding and mindful. They’re not only striking to look at, but many have real utility when it comes to sleep by adding oxygen, providing soothing scents or purifying the air.
This jungle-themed trend will continue forward, as we all strive to keep our Cacti and Monstera alive for another year. So perhaps think about upgrading your planters and cachepots to match your new themes or room colours?
Consider these Theme-enhancing Accoutrements:
• Wall art/prints are a must, of course!
• For a bare floor area, themed sculptures can work beautifully (below)
• Themed Lighting décor can have a great impact as well
Textiles
Remember the days when rooms were completely matchy-matchy? You could pick up your favourite home store catalogue, choose a colour and fabric, then select each lampshade and duvet cover set to match. You can still do that, but these days it’s all about the mismatching coming together for an overall, eclectic aesthetic.
Go wild and switch up textures and patterns on items such as lampshades, pillow covers, sheets, carpets, rugs and wallpaper. If you’re looking to create more of a luxurious feel in your rooms, why not switch up fabrics opting for satin, velvet and leather. Doing this adds depth and interest to a space making it feel less corporate and structured and more homely while staying on-trend and style.
Just don’t skimp on the bedsheets – you’re going to spend hours in them, so make sure they’re comfy!
For bedsheets that stand the test of time and last many, many washes, consider changing the fabric from polyester to more sustainable and durable material such as silk, cotton or linen. Remember when purchasing a cotton product to look out for companies and products that are Fair Trade certified and can prove that their fabrics come from sustainable origins.
This is the year of doing it yourself and upgrading your space, so be brave and get redecorating.
